I believe that all children have the right to feel safe in their classroom environment; they should have the right to tell a teacher anything they want and feel that they will be safe when doing so. I think children should have the right to express themselves as long as it does not offend or harm anyone else. I think that as long as I work close with my students, my student’s families, my colleagues and my community resources than there should be no reason that any of my students or their families are not getting what they need. Whether its food, healthcare, or just some extra help with school. I remember when I was in 5th grade, frustrated because I couldn’t keep up with the rest of the class in math and my writing papers would always come back covered in red ink from all the corrections I needed to make. I had one teacher see my frustration, but also saw my potential. She sat me down and over the course of the next few months worked with me to improve in school and I did. I have always remembered that one teacher as being my saving grace when it came to school. She’s the reason I stuck it out and told myself I was better than a few red pen marks. That’s way I want to teach. I want to let my students know that even though they make mistakes, in the classroom or outside, they are better than those few mistakes, or the red ink on the paper. And I’ll help them get there.
I have two young children, a 4 year old son and 15 month old daughter. Both of which are full of more energy than I could ever hope to have and keep me on my toes. In my free time I enjoy taking my dogs out to the field and letting them and my two children just run and let out some energy. I have a punching bag that my husband believes has been worth its weight in gold. He says that I get so passionate and angry about the world and sometimes the only way I can get it out is by using my punching bag. I also enjoy going up to the top of the mountain and watching the sun set and all the city lights go on. It is only then that the city actually seems peaceful.
